Shirt Recommendations

I think I've finally got my measurements right.

Neck: 15.5" (15" measurement + 1/2")
Chest: 36"
Waist: 29.5"
Shoulders: 18"
Sleeve: 33.5"

I am 5'10" and 150lbs.

I'm looking for a few dress shirts, and am unsure of which brands to look at.

Any and all recommendations would be appreciated!

I have seen Corneliani shirts on eBay for ~$100, which fits my price range. My limited research suggests that Corneliani quality is generally well regarded, and they tend to fit slim people well. Am I headed in the right direction?

Over the last 10 to 12 years, my provider of choice for dress shirts, as well as for many of my casual shirts has with increasing consistency become Brooks Brothers. The prices are right (and in the price range you mentioned in the OP) and the quality is such that the shirts just seem to represent a good value to me. Given your measurements, the tailored fit option might be your best option with BB's, as BB shirts are quite generously fit!

I have your same neck and waist measurements and a slightly larger chest. Because our necks are deemed large in proportion to our slim frames, no OTR shirts fit us. BB slim fit will not fit. Extra slim will be closer, but with those broad shoulders of yours (and mine) I doubt it would be a good shoulder-chest fit. I've worn Jcrew shirts, which are cut for a more athletic build, but they're only marginally better than BB slim. You, sir, need MTM. I've started Lands End. Don't spend ~$90 chasing some highend European label that's not going to be slim enough when you can get two shirts from good fabric that fit for that price. Besides, if I WERE going to spend that kind of money on one shirt, I'd go here first: propercloth.com. They also have a handy slim-shirt comparison chart. Good luck.

I second the recommendation for custom shirts. I have similar measurements to you, and I have not found any OTR shirts that fit, even among so called "slim fit" shirts. I was recently fitted by one of the tailors from mytailor.com during a recent visit to Houston. I haven't yet received the shirts, but I am hopeful that they will be a much better fit than the Brooks Brothers/Polo/Hugo Boss slim fit shirts currently in my closet. They can't be any worse. And, since cost is a concern for you, they worked out to $96/shirt, including customs, shipping, etc.

I went with mytailor.com primarily because they have the traveling tailors. I didn't trust myself for the measurements.

I have short arms and found myself taking OTR shirts to a tailor who charged me $15 to shorten the sleeves.

So now I spend a little more -- approx $100-- and have my shirts made by mytailor.com. (Joe comes through San Francisco a couple times a year.) I've had only good experiences with them, and it is a pleasure to pick the fabric, collar, etc...

I may not be able to afford $1,000 shoes or $3,000 suits, but I do allow myself this indulgence.

BB Slim fit.

I have tried mytailor in the past. Nice shirts and well made but some of the fabrics have been disappointing in terms of wear.

I also favor Brooks Brothers slim fit. I will only wear those shirts from now on, having found a great source of quality shirts.

I own 9 BB slim fit dress shirts. I think they are a good value for the money, and they fit me well when I was in the 175-180 pound range.

Now, I'm just under 150 pounds with a 31-inch waist. (I am 2 inches taller than the OP, otherwise our measurements are the same.) And the BB slim fit shirts are just too big. And it's not that I like the way-too-tight Euro look.

I encourage the OP to try on the BB shirt; maybe he will like the fit. If he does, great.

But, if he has to tailor the shirt to get a good fit, he may as well just go custom and get something that fits properly from the start. I don't care if he uses mytailor.com, propercloth.com, some other on-line service, or his favorite local tailor. My points were (a) it is highly unlikely that any OTR shirt is going to fit him well and, that being the case, (b) there are reasonably priced made-to-measure options available to him.

Can anyone who has experience with both mytailor.com and BB MTM compare the two? I do not know anything about BB MTM, but heard it is closer to MTO rather than MTM. Can anyone with experience with BB explain their measurement process and what their MTM shirts price range is like?

BB slim fit shirts will be a little baggy on you. If you feel comfortable with a 15" neck it might be an OK fit. A 15.5" neck will be way too baggy throughout the chest. Fit through the shoulder may also be tricky. You would really have to try one on to see how it fit you overall.

BB MTM is probably the way to go. If you have a corporate discount (you can get one through AA if you meet certain criteria) or wait for a MTM buy 4 get 1 free sale it works out to be a good deal. I recently got a batch and the average price was $110 a shirt, mostly non-iron fabrics.

The Brooks Brothers made-to-measure program in the store is just as competitive as any other made-to-measure program. I personally use it to get their non-iron fabrics in a more properly fitting shirt with the details that I desire: English collar, no pocket, no back pleat, applied placket, and double button or double cuff. It allows you to pick your styles of fabric, cuff, collar, details, and fit. They take measurements and ask for the desired fit; it is very standard in my opinion. This is only at selected Brooks Brother's stores.

However, mytailor is more elaborate and allows you to get more intimate with the shirt with more options and details. It will offer you collar length and height or even to clone an existing shirt's details but with a better fit. Unless you desire a series of non-iron fabrics, mytailor offers more customization, and I think a better run for your dollar or whatever currency you use.


The other option is to have a shirt made to order. The first is the option to have a garment made for you in a pre cut pattern and size. So, a slim fit 15/33 shirt would be the same as if you purchased it off the rack, but you get some choice as to the cuff, collar, and details desired.
