A Land's End Shirt Rant

I love my Lands End shirts. They offer the best value for the money that I'm aware of, fit me well, and look great. I have a closet full of them. BUT...

... does it bug anyone else how short the tails are on an LE dress shirt? I wear the TF versions and though they never come untucked, it drives me bonkers how short the tails are! I would gladly pay and extra $5 a shirt to have tails 2-3 inches longer and an extra (8th) placket button. If they made the collar a tad taller (1/8") they'd have the perfect dress shirt.

Back before they ruined the brand, JCPenney's Stafford Executive shirts had nice long tails and an 8th button, never came untucked, and never felt sloppy. Now the fabric sucks and you can't get exact sleeve lengths.

Should I take this up with the LE customer service people, or am I alone here?

I have a closet full of LE shirts and I have no problems with their length. I don't know how tall you are but I'm 5'9" and wear their regular length. In fact, I had a couple of Roundtree and Yorke Gold Label (Dillards) shirts that had tails that I thought were too long and I had them shortened to the same length as the LE shirts.

Lands' End offers most shirts in "tall." the tail is quite a bit longer for a few more bucks.

Most of my shirts are from Lands' End. I've had great luck with the custom program, too.

I have several LE shirts. I agree about the fit: it isn't that great. I'm tall and fairly thin and yet I find their standard cut to be both a bit short and a bit trim.

I also was shocked during my last visit to a JC Penney's to see how far the Stafford line has fallen.

I bought several LE OCBD a few years ago at Sears. I was shocked at how quickly the collars frayed. I haven't bought any since.

I don't know if all stores are the same but the LE OCBDs that I buy online aren't the same shirts that are sold at my local Sears store.

I'm short and the lack of excess shirttail is an unnoticed bonus. I guess it's possible that the shirt would blouse out a bit less if the tail was longer, but there's no untucking issue.

If the waistband dips a bit, that last horizontal button (sometimes in contrast stitching) does sometimes get exposed. That is a bit of a nuisance.

I only see 2 real problems with their shirts:
1. The fabric is not soft
2. The collar is just slightly too small

Exactly! Im not tall - 5 10, nor do I have a long torso - most of my height is in my legs. But that last placket button always finds its way out of my waistband throughout the day and Im left with a gap until I make my way to the mensroom to tuck in my shirt.

In full disclosure I wear mostly (90%) No Iron Pinpoints (and am therefore a blasphemer before this august body) and really like them, but my mother dressed me in Penney's shirts during my formative years, so maybe I'm spoiled by the longer tails and 8th placket button, but good grief, LE surely can produce something comparable and make some money.

Correct. The biggest difference is the shirts at Sears are S-M-L whereas the shirts online are sold in exact sizes.

I have not one complaint with my LE ocbds.

I'm assuming you're wearing the Enro non-irons. I have to say I've worn a lot of shirts of the non-iron variety and think the collar roll on the Enro is better than most if not all the shirts I have, including the Brooks Brothers roll. I have no problem with non-irons.

It's funny you mention that. We sell Enro Non-Irons at the store, and they are awesome shirts that fit most people really well. In fact I think they have the best fabric of any non-iron I've ever worn. But they fit me terribly. I have to have them tailored in the sleeve/body and have the sleeves shortened as well. It's just not worth the hassle to me, so I buy LE. I wear mostly non-iron because that's what we sell at work (even though it may offend the purists - and I like not looking like I slept in my shirt!).

How long ago did you purchase the LE OCBDs in question? I ask only because the description of the current offerings online makes a point of noting "longer tails that stay tucked." I am wondering if this is a recent addition meant to address the problem you raise.

Still only 7 buttons though.

Despite what they advertise, Lands' End shirt tails are too short. I've been wearing them for years...though they are discontinuting my favorite shirt the Hyde Park beefy oxford. I never thought the tails on their shirts were short until a couple of years ago...but they say they are the same. I've moved up a size...so it's hard to compare. I have long arms and am able to pay $5.00 more for the tall size and get much longer tails and an 8th button. If you can do that, you'll have a great shirt. If you can't, but are willing to go to the touble of getting your sleeves shortened...you'll have a great shirt. With the Hyde Park becoming extinct--I don't know how many more shirts I'll buy from Lands' End. Maybe some sport shirts. I don't find that their non-iron shirts hold up that well.

The tails are shorter than most dress shirts I've owned, but I've never had them come untucked. I also appreciate the trimness of the "tailored fit" models. They fit me like MTM. It's the only OTR shirt that I can wear.

This is useful info.; thanks, chaps! I need a longer shirttail myself, and so since I'm now in the market for shirts I'm pleased to know that LE might not work for me.

Mine never come untucked either, but it just irritates me that the tails are so blasted short. It shouldn't bother me, but it does. LE does such a great job I wish they would just touch up the shirt a bit they'd have a real winner (although I'll still buy them as is).

I've no issue with the tails of Land's End shirts and I've been wearing them for twenty years. To clarify, I've never thought land's End were the best out there but in my opinion at one time, (prior to any non-iron options) they were the best value for the money out there.

I still buy the must iron solid color pinpoints but they are offered with so few options in terms collars, patterns, and fit, (trim or regular), that I'm unable to get much variety.

I work in a hospital clinical environment and it's never been too painful of someone bled or puked, (several variations of the puke thing from mild spit up to full on projectile action), on one of my $29.50 Land's End pinpoints.

But one of the above mentioned episodes on a $50.- to $80.- shirt can really ruin my day.

I know Land's End has only responded to the demands of what we the customers want,.....Jeeze I can't believe so many men will buy a non-iron shirt! I would honestly rather buy a 60/40 or all synthetic shirt than wear a beautiful all cotton pinpoint or broadcloth shirt that's been ruined by applying a nasty coating that takes away all the reasons for wanting an all cotton shirt in the first place.

Also, I think my LE Hyde Parks, pinpoints, and regular oxfords are an unmatched value.

The only problem I have is where Lands End dress shirts are made. 10 years ago, all their shirts were made in the USA and had very long tuck in tails. I use to buy their Hyde Park Oxford shirt until they dropped the line probably due to cost. When that happened, I stopped buying from Lands End.

I now buy all my dress shirts at O'Connells since it is a 8 mile trip from my home.

I have had the obverse problem; with LE and Jos. A. Bank I have to buy the "Tall" range, which is far longer than I need (I'm 6'4" btw). It also chaps my hide to pay 25% more because I have a 36 sleeve. For this reason, I don't buy my shirts from either retailer. If you shop the B2 Factory stores during the sales, you can find the regular store shirts (not the 346) for $20 and under.

Yes, LE apparently has ceased production of the Hyde Park, but you can still buy it, in multiple different colors & patterns.

Stock up on Hyde Parks while you can. I understand this is the last season they will be sold and at 19.99 for solids and 24.50 for patterns they really are a great deal.
I've been wearing them for years and stocked up. Doubt I'll be getting many more shirts from Lands' End. They've gone almost completely to non-irons. A shame. They were a great value.
