The traditional form is to simply lower ones' lips to within a few centimeters of a ladies hand AND only a married lady AND only after the evening has fallen AND only if she has given her hand in such a manner as to be kissed.


Anything else is just a modern fad. In this case do it any way you like because no one of manners would allow you to do it to begin with other than in its' traditional form.

What a freaky thread. I can't imagine bowing and kissing a woman's hand. It seems so theatrical and absurd. How would she reply, "Thank you m'Lord." or something? .

My wife is Italian, so I had to learn to cheek kiss at every hello and goodbye, but that is a much more current practice - at least as I've noticed - among Southern Europeans and many younger Americans.

And among the vast majority of normal people in the rest of Europe as well.

why bow down to women or girls, by doing so you are putting them on a pedestal and they will be looking down on you. This is 2010, women are always demanding that they be treated as equals and they should be treated as such.

Kissing a strangers hand is creepy and bowing in front of them is equally strange.

A firm but easy handshake is much more appropriate at introduction. If the conversation goes well, a hug or kiss on the cheek at parting is fine as well.

Save the hand kissing for your girlfriend or wife.
