Christmas Party-host attire.
I'm hosting a Christmas-time party at my private club in NYC for clients,
other lawyers and various friends--about 150 in total.
Club rules require coat and tie, thereby fixing the dress of attending
men.
As host, though, I was thinking about wearing my black tie; owing
to the festive occasion.
Would the Forum think that too much; and should I just go w/lounge suit,
white shirt and appropriate tie.
Thanks, all, and early Holiday best wishes!

You should wear the same thing that everyone else does (i.e., if everyone else will be wearing a lounge suit, then you should also wear a lounge suit). Your guests will feel more comfortable this way. If someone arrives in a lounge suit, and the host is wearing a dinner jacket, the guest may have a momentary feeling of discomfort stemming from a fear that he is inappropriately dressed. You want to avoid even that fleeting feeling of discomfort!

I agree that unless you are performing or speaking, etc. black tie might be a bit much for you if your guests are in suits or sport coats.
However, you could possibly wear your nicest suit to make sure you are one of the best dressed there.Just your semi-impoverished dandy wanna-be

You can go to a florist and have them make a holiday-themed boutonnière for you. That would be a nice touch that would set you apart as the host.

What is a holiday themed boutinerre?
Men do not wear corsages or flowers with greenery surrounding them. Be careeful of this. I think what you wear depends upon how your invitation reads. Sounds like a gala event so I would have the invitation read black tie/business suit. Does everyone know that tie and jackets are required at your club? With the social level of people you are inviting, I don't think any one would take it amiss if the host wore a tuxedo if the invitation so states, especially if ladies are invited. I don't think you have given enough info for anyone on this forum to render advice.

If you decide to wear black tie while everyone else is in lounge suits, make sure to leave your fly down and a bit of shirt tail hanging out.

Do the invitations say black tie? If not, don't.

I agree with the others-unless the invitation specifies black tie, wear your best lounge suit-dark gray or navy-with perhaps a colorful tie.Wearing black tie at a non-black tie event IMHO looks like you are trying to "one-up" the other men.

To all:
I thought so!
Thanks; it'll be a lounge suit.
Best,
