So I just started shaving with a vintage 1953 Gillette Super Speed DE razor. I got it off ebay and am sharing a blade sampler pack with a friend at work who's starting out as well. After 2 shaves, I'm really enjoying it. I am not a guy that has a problem using a cartridge razor, and I can use them for a good long while before they get noticeably dull. With the DE razor, it sort of feels right shaving with that type. I care about my appearance and typically will spend a little extra time to do it right. I like the DE razor because its vintage, and the blades are like $.30 each, and if they last half as long as a cartridge razor it will be easy to save a good bit of money on them. Anyone on the fence should definitely try out the DE razor with a good shave cream/soap and a good brush. And don't be scared about cutting yourself too bad, there really isn't much blade sticking out and you have to work the right angle to even cut the hairs so I can understand why they are called a safety razor. I've shaved twice now and with a little care and patience I haven't cut myself yet.

Hello all;

I frequently wear silk bow ties that have a tendency to fray on the top ends due to heavy beard stubble by the end of the day. My regular after-shave lotion doesn't help much. Shaving twice in a day isn't an option for me.

Can anyone recommend a lotion or product that might help keep the fraying to a minimum? Is there anything that can be done to the tie itself to keep it from happening?

Gentlemen, long time no post (there has been a few events that didn't allow me to do so, such as a huge earthquake, me joining the engineering staff at the largest telescope on the hemisphere, the Chilean soccer selection performing great on the WC, and many other stuff...).

Anyway, let's get to business. Yesterday I had an appointment with the dermatologist for what I believed was a persistent acne on my face... turns out it's a staph infection that spreads from the nose to the face, and it's exacerbated by the consumption of all type of greases, specially those coming from milk and dairy products... I'm working on the diet, but another factor is the shaving, I've always used razors, sometimes they irritate my skin, but never thought that's something that made the infection worse...

So the recommendation from the dermatologist was to get an electrical shaver. My problem with that is that I already have one, but it doesn't work very fine with the hair on my neck and cheeks, as it grows large and thin and my shaver can't really get a hold onto them. My current shaver is a Braun, which has a steel perforated foil.

Would a change on the shaver help me with that issue? I can still use razors, but only when truly necesary per doc's recommendation. I've seen that the operation principle on the Philips is different, the hair doesn't have to get into a hole like in the Braun, it kinda gets cut from the bottom :confused2::confused2::confused2::confused2:

Any advice will be tremendously appreciated, I went to the store this morning, and got aid from a woman who didn't seem to understand the problem.

Thanks and best Regards.

You'd think finding a pair of nail clippers that actually work would be a trivial task. For 30+ years we bought regular $2 Revlon clippers, they worked great and lasted forever, but the ones sold now leave nails terribly rough and split. So we splurged on a pair of high-end Seki clippers (hand sharpened blah blah) and they leave nails with squared edges that feel like razor blades.

So has anyone found a replacement for the classic Revlon nail clippers that works as well?
