Suit Fit

General.  Heavy and muscular men should avoid bold patterns and heavy fabrics, since they add to the weight. Thin men can look good in patterns and heavier fabrics. Use horizontal and vertical lines to your advantage to enhance your body style.

By height: Short under 5’ 8"

Regular 5’ 8" to 6’

Long 6’ to 6’ 4"

Extra Long over 6’ 4"

By size: Suit jacket size is determined by your chest measurement. A size 42-suit jacket should fit a gentleman with a 42-inch chest. The chest is measured under the arms an inch or two at the fullest point.

You can also take your overarm measurement around your chest including the fullest part of your arms at the highest point of the shoulder blades keeping the measuring tape parallel to the floor. If this measurement is 7 or more inches larger than your chest measurement you’ll want the next largest size than your chest size to avoid a binding or pulling in the upper arm and shoulder area.

If you are measuring yourself for a "mail order" suit you’ll want to get a size large enough for your own tailor to do all the detail work that makes a suit fit properly.
