Popular types of robes:

Beach wrapup – a large square or rectangle of fabric usually terrycloth wrapped around the body after swimming or as beachwear fashion.

Caftan (or Kaftan) – Moroccan inspired garment similar to a long full dress with slit neckline decorated with embroidery and long bell shaped sleeves.  Introduced for at home wear in the mid 1960’s.

Dressing Gown --  term used from 1770’s to the end of the 19th century for a loose coat like garment made in elaborately patterned silk.  From 1850’s to 1860’s worn for breakfast, after that relegated to the bed and bathroom.

Happi coat – A Hip length jacket, made in the Japanese Kimono style of brightly printed fabric.   Copied from knee length jackets worn by Japanese laborers. They were popular for beachwear in the 1950’s and 60’s.   Frequently it has a printed medallion on the back in imitation of the original jackets, which had the company logo on the back.

Shave coat – man’s knee length wraparound, often matched to pajamas.
