A tip o' the hat to
'Ask Andy'

Manhattan Beach fashion stylist's Web site answers men's concerns.

DAILY BREEZE

Admit it, guys: You're not exactly sure whether you should match your socks to your shoes or to your pants.

Or whether it's OK to wear pastel in the winter (or at all). And what about ties -- are they really necessary?

Relax, says Manhattan Beach style guru Andy Gilchrist. He's got it covered.

"Most guys don't talk to other guys about clothing, even if they're really interested in it," said Gilchrist, 63, who hopes his fashion advice Web site, www.AskAndyAboutClothes.com can help men navigate their wardrobe quandaries.

"For one, I think it's probably a macho thing. And two, a lot of guys aren't interested in clothing -- so if you are, you might question your macho-ness."

By the looks of it though, there are a lot of fashion-conscious men out there. Since the site was launched in 2001, "Ask Andy About Clothes" has grown to become one of the top independent men's fashion Web sites, with more than 600,000 hits per day, Gilchrist said.

His online forum, where users can post comments and questions to Gilchrist or to each other, has about 9,000 registered members from all over the world.

"Someone will ask, 'Where's the best place to buy shoes in Paris,' and six people will answer him," Gilchrist said, adding that he never expected his site to go international.

"I was just thinking I would do a little Web site, that I would get some high school kids asking me questions and I'd tell them how to match their socks. I didn't realize it would go so big."

It's still a hobby, he said. But these days it's a profitable one.

"It helps my clothes budget," said Gilchrist.

Now retired, Gilchrist spends four to five hours a day working on the site. That includes answering "Ask Andy" e-mails and posting style tips.

Questions posed may run the gamut from the specific, such as "Do you actually wear that 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' tie your daughter gave you for Christmas?" to the general "What's a cuff link?" type of query.

He also takes periodic trips for "Ask Andy" events across the country where designers and members of his online forum congregate to learn more about various clothing lines. In March, more than 200 people are expected to attend such an event in New York City.

"It's a busy hobby," he said.

And a fairly new one.

Gilchrist has long been interested in clothes, but his role as the go-to guy for style didn't start until he got a part-time job at a Redondo Beach Polo Ralph Loren store in 1990. He was 47 at the time (the oldest salesman at the store) and already working full-time at TRW as an occupational fire and safety specialist.

He said he was interested in the job at the Polo store because it was fun for him -- not to mention the discounts he would get as an employee there.

Soon enough, Gilchrist was the top salesman, a position he maintained for five of his six years working at the store (that other year he was second-to-the-top).

"Guys would come in and they wouldn't have a clue about anything," he said.

"So finally I started making up little sheets on how to tie ties or what to look for in a suit and printed that off with my card at the bottom."

When the store closed in 1996, Gilchrist had compiled enough material to start writing his e-book, The Encyclopedia of Men's Clothes, a 900-page CD manual addressing everything from belts and blazers to wallets and watches. His closet, meanwhile, had grown into a jam-packed collection of perfectly labeled and meticulously organized apparel (shoes are kept in name-tagged Tupperware boxes).

Initially, he started the Web site as a way to sell his book, but when people started writing in with fashion questions, "Ask Andy" was born.

"Probably the most common question is, 'Do the socks match the shoes or the trousers?'" he said. "It's the trousers. It makes you look taller and its an uninterrupted line to the shoes."

Oh, and about that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer tie you got for Christmas, he says -- just wear it.

"That's one of those things you just do. All the guys at work will understand."

Andy Gilchrist's list of the 10 most common men's fashion mistakes:

1. "Never wear a short-sleeve shirt with a tie. Short-sleeve shirts are perceived as lower-class apparel. Fine as part of a uniform or if you aspire to be a fast-food manager, not if you want to project a professional image."

2. "Shoes are one of the most evaluated elements of men's wardrobes. Your shoes should be clean, shined, in good repair and appropriate for the occasion. If you are wearing a suit, wear lace-up shoes. Don't wear the same shoe on consecutive days and keep shoe trees in your shoes when you're not wearing them."

3. "Trousers should be long enough to cover your socks, and socks should cover your shins even when you cross your legs. Pants are long enough if they have a slight break in the front. Pleats and cuffs are traditional and functional. Pleats let you sit down comfortably and cuffs add weight to the bottoms, allowing for proper drape."

4. "Never wear both a belt and braces (suspenders). You'll appear insecure."

5. "Socks should match your trousers."

6. "Belts should match your shoes."

7. "Ties should reach your belt line. This is neither arbitrary nor negotiable. Too short of a tie makes you look out of proportion."

8. "Properly knotted ties have a dimple under the knot. Clips and tacks are out of date."

9. "Suit and sports jackets are symbols of authority. However, the bottom buttons of men's jackets are not designed to be buttoned."

10. "Suit and sports jackets should fit properly which includes showing ¼-inch to ½-inch of linen or shirtsleeve at the jacket sleeve."

Here is a recent testimonial about THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MEN'S CLOTHES:

"I received The Encyclopedia of Men's Clothes this afternoon, Andy, and it's terrifically useful! Thank you for explaining how to access the various disk components--your instructions helped me to quickly navigate the book.

I particularly like your logical, straightforward approach to each section. I mean to say, it really makes sense to explain why something matters, then how to care for it once you've chosen to incorporate the thing into your life, and then to include a history of the item, which focuses the reader's attention on its intrinsic value to a gentleman's kit.

Your book is more useful than Esquire's Encyclopedia of 20th-Century Men's Fashions, because the latter serves as a chronicle not a guide. The Encyclopedia of Men's Clothes provides a road map for fellows who wish to understand the choices they make, and who wish to make choices they understand. I am simply delighted with your book!"
